SLIG Scores Midnight Victory
19th August 2010
A Suffolk Lenadoon Interface Group (SLIG) team won a leading football tournament in June.
The SLIG B Team notched up SLIG’s first-ever win in the Midnight Street soccer tournament, which was originally set up as a programme for 14-17 year olds to curb anti-social behavior at times when it is most rife. The tournament has outgrown its origins, embracing broader cross-community and other values. The finals of the competition took place in Dundalk.
SLIG has participated in the competition for two years and plays out of the Olympia Leisure Centre which is the convergent point for teams from across South and West Belfast. The 5-a-side league runs for 8 weeks twice a year and according to Neil Mc Kee, SLIG’s Sports Policy & Advocacy Worker, “it is a format young people with their competitive nature relish.”
He explained that the winners and runners-up of both the cup and plate competitions travelled to Dundalk for the National finals. SLIG ‘B’ competed in the cup competition in which “Mark Shannon’s last minute strike clinched the game to send the local boys into ecstasy.”
The next Midnight Street Soccer league and competition is in October.
