SLIG Ups Communications Capacity

19th August 2010

The Suffolk Lenadoon Interface Group (SLIG) is upgrading communications in a bid to inform staff, stakeholders, the Suffolk and Lenadoon communities and the wider public about its purpose and plans.

A Communications Officer was appointed in early June. One of the first tasks facing Bernard Conlon, a former journalist, is to guide a major publishing project. This will produce “the SLIG story” and the history of its catchment communities. There will also be photographic and possibly audiovisual aspects in an initiative that begins this month (August).

Bernard Conlon points to the “significant signpost material that has been produced by consultants and others,” regarding communications. While first seeking to improve and consolidate how SLIG communicates with a “conversation” among staff and stakeholders, SLIG’s Communications Officer wants to see a “strategy and structure” emerge. A short document has been produced which outlines some of the things that have to be consolidated and achieved.

This, it is believed, is only the start of a strategy that will lead to a flexible structure that will see the website supplemented by an ezine and newsletter, for example. Media relations, news monitoring, briefing, publications and presentation work are other elements.

The document: “Rolling Out a Communications Strategy - A customised approach says: “the task at hand is one of customising a communications structure to meet SLIG’s unique, sensitive and fluid requirements.”

Any conversation must be two-way. Already staff and active stakeholders have been advised to feed news and information. The outcome of this is starting to be seen with the appearance of new material on the website and the distribution of an acting publication that will provide the basis for an integrated information structure.
