Sporting Chances

19th August 2010

The Suffolk Lenadoon Interface Group (SLIG) enabled five young people from Suffolk – Lenadoon to take up coaching apprenticeships in a variety of sports recently, which has led to full-time employment for some of those taking part.

The coaching opportunities were provided through the Community Sports Leadership Programme which targets young people, aged 17 – 22. The scheme, which lasted 16 weeks, offered qualifications in sports such as soccer, rugby and basketball. Child protection, first aid and good relations training were also part of the training.

Young people from the SLIG catchment participated in the South and West Belfast Programme, in areas determined by the Belfast’s Neighbourhood Renewal. Twenty young people from across South and West Belfast took part.

Two of SLIG’s participants, Kevin Parker and Stephen Hesketh have gone on to implement the skills that they learnt. They have linked up with experienced coaches to deliver 25 hours paid sport coaching and multi skills. At the end of the summer they will be able to work full-time for one of the participating organisations: Sportopps.

According to SLIG Sports Policy and Advocacy Worker, Neil Mc Kee, “SLIG are always looking at ways of utilising the training and skills recently acquired by these young people in order to maximize the value of the experience they have gained.”
