Ghosts Galore at Halloween

13th October 2010

Joe Hamill, one of SLIG’s Intercultural Officers, is marking Halloween with a historical walk and talk tour of Belfast city centre.

Joe has secured well-know North Belfast local historian, Joe Baker, to take the tour around sites where 18th and 19th century executions and other gruesome events took place. The lore surrounding the Lucifer Match Factory tragedy in Smithfield Mill and the sleazy side of Victorian life will be explored. The Belfast Poor House and the venue for old Belfast duelling contests also feature. Stories about body snatchers in Clifton Street Cemetery will be told and the cemetery’s place in the Irish Potato Famine will be highlighted.

History will be mingled with ghouls, ghosts and gore – along with a brisk walk. What better way to celebrate Halloween?

The talking tour that takes place on Friday 29 October is fully booked. As a result, Joe Hamill is already planning the next ghosts and ghoul’s gig.
